How to Start a Podcast

How I went about starting a podcast is something I get asked allll the time and trust me when I say I was CLUELESS starting out. I mean… clueless. I had no idea what kind of mic to buy, what to even record it on, it felt so overwhelming to me so I want to break it down into the small steps I took because it really wasn’t as hard as I expected!

So, here is a breakdown of what I did and the the steps I recommend to get started:

  • Figure out the strategy behind your show

    • Who is it for? What is it about? Are you doing solo shows or guest shows or a mix of both? What are your goals with the podcast?

  • Research podcast platforms to determine which host you will use

    • I use Libsyn. Buzzsprout and Anchor are popular too!

  • Create album art/ a “brand” for your podcast

  • Figure out if you want to do editing yourself or outsource editing

  • Create a launch plan

    • How many episodes do you want to launch with? Map them out, schedule interviews!

  • Get brand photos done if possible (you’ll NEED/ want the content)

  • Use Google docs to write an episode outline or questions for guests before getting on interview calls

  • Use Calendly to schedule guest interviews

  • Write up a general template to use for website show notes

  • Create templates for your social media advertising and figure out how you want to promote episodes

  • Record your episodes and have fun!

A few of the specific tools, services, and resources I use are:

Remember, done is better than perfect and you can always change things as you go so just get started and learn as you go. You can do this!
