Building a Community with Amanda Smith

I’m chatting with Amanda Smith, the ultimate girl boss!

Amanda is the founder and CEO of Dallas Girl Gang, as well as her own coaching business.

Amanda started a Facebook group called Dallas Girl Gang in 2017 after moving to the Dallas Fort Worth area and looking for friends. She decided to fill a need by creating what she was looking for but couldn’t find.

If you’re looking for a community, Amanda says you do have to put yourself out there a bit. Don’t just hide behind your profile but actively network with people. She also reminds us that things are very searchable these days so type in the key words you’re looking for and see what pops up.

Amanda also talks about how the connections she’s made have enriched her personal and professional life. But she warns to make sure there is a demand for the community before starting it. She suggests taking time to get clear on who you are targeting and how the community will benefit them.

When it comes to finding people and building up the community, Amanda says it was a snowball effect where each new member spread the word and invited even more people to join. She said her group actually has two ideal avatars and she works hard to speak to each of them directly to attract new members.

Once your community grows, it is important to survey your people to make sure you are giving your people what they want and staying relevant to them.

When I asked Amanda if she could go back in time and give her 2017 self some advice, she said her advice would be to slow down. She recognizes she had too much to juggle at the time, and she could have not juggled so many balls at once.

Whether you’re looking to find a community or start one, I hope this conversation has helped you see the limitless possibilities!
